British Columbia

British Columbia is a very stable place to have an island. The winters do exist, however, unlike in the tropics, and this has helped keep the prices down. There are also a ton of islands in British Columbia, and to a lesser degree, the American Northwest. Thus this is the place to buy if you want accessibility, civilization, and economy, but don't mind the winter-months. Ken Lund has a great page dealing with islands in this region and all over the world.

54 acre Erasmus Island has a cabin already on it, but you probably would have to tear it down and build again. Nonetheless, the low shoreline (mostly not beach, I don't think, it seems largely to be smooth rock), possible water, and good access make it interesting. $490,000 CAD

North Ballenas Island

A fairly large, very attractive island near Vancouver. There's a government lighthouse on the island; consequently about 6 acres won't be yours, but there should be minimal traffic to the lighthouse since it's unmanned. The price is high here because of location, size, and also because the island is admittedly very pretty. Also, there's already water, which is a big plus. I'm not sure how likely it is that the government is going to let you tap into their electric cable, but I suppose it's possible. No real beach, but a nice variety of terrain. $1,550,000 CAD (which is about 1.137 million American).
